It’s a dynamic city with a lot of energy”. He paused to sip on a dainty cup of espresso. We were sitting on mid-century sofas in one of La Cité’s freshly-restored apartments with double-height windows overlooking the sea. At reasonable prices, the hyper-limited menu still gets to a bit of everything — the flautas drenched in a salsa verde, the ribeye tacos, and a can’t-miss miso caramel churro. Union BBQ is boldly serving Texas barbecue in North Carolina out of a weekend-only food truck. Dynamic duo Holden Sasser and Chase Young serve a mean, best-in-class brisket with a charred crust that turns into a tender, layered, smokey bite, paired best with sour pickles. The lime zest on the pork spare ribs is a quiet hero, and the beef cheek barbacoa sandwich, deluged in rajas con crema and a touch of cilantro, is sloppy in all of the right ways. Like a proud curtain call, the Big Deborah, a fresh-baked and double-the-size take on a Little Debbie’s oatmeal cream pie, nostalgically closes out the meal. Tracking down the smoked meat served in to-go pizza boxes at Union Barbecue is worth the effort — like an oh-so-satisfying game of hard-to-get.

How to Sage: Energetically Clear Your Home and Office

sage house cleansing

It is crucial to understand that every home holds the emotional imprints and energy of its previous inhabitants. Such imprints and energy can cause significant discomfort to current residents. Its roots trace back to the practices of Native American tribes, Indigenous Australians, and various Central and South American cultures. Make sure you’re protecting any carpets or fragile tabletops. You might always want to keep your hair up, and you’ll probably want to wear black–you’re going to get some ash on you.

Why is Smudging a Great Way to Cleanse + Purify?

To support and respect the cultures that developed the practice, purchase sage from native gatherers, crafters, and artists. A 2016 research project for the University of Mississippi established that white sage (Salvia apiana) is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain. A 2014 study documented white prairie sage (also known as estafiate) as an important traditional remedy for treating anxiety, depression, and mood disorders in certain cultures.

How to Use Sage to Cleanse Your Home of Bad Vibes

Afterwards, take a bit of the ash and put it at the entrance. Place it on the inside of the door if you need to protect energies from going out, or on the outside if you have a lot of people coming in and you want to protect the energies that come through the door. We, as humans, can feel energy from different sources, even if our logical mind can’t quite place what it is that we are feeling. I'm a knowledge seeker, dog parent, nature lover, and a big fan of bubbly water. I'm also the owner of Inspired Design Inc, an biophilic interior design and flooring company in Kansas City.

You can use pure sage, but some also add branches (or flowers) of lavender, rosemary, or other fragrant, pleasing, and clarifying herbs. If you're new to the practice of smudging, there are a few more items you'll need to get started. "Traditionally, people use an abalone shell to hold the sage and then use a feather to fan and spread the smoke around the space once the sage is burning," says Colleen McCann, a shamanic energy practitioner. Shamanism recognizes that the biggest influencing factor in any situation that we may encounter is our intention.

Sage Cleansing: How To Burn Sage, Benefits & More!

Then, decide on a mantra or prayer to repeat while saging that encapsulates this intention. Going slowly will help you get more in touch with the words you are saying, plus walking too fast can extinguish your sage smudge stick. Holding the sage stick, follow the perimeter of the door and work your way around the edge of each room, paying special attention to areas where there were arguments, such as living rooms and bedrooms. To go even deeper with your cleansing, you can also say a mantra out loud, which will resonate with your heart and also enhance the energy field with the sounds of your voice. There is very little research on burning sage as a practice beyond the cultural practice of the ritual.

It is crucial to disrupt and eliminate these negative energies to increase the likelihood of achieving business success. Following exposure to distressing news or negative media, sage burning can aid in releasing the accumulated negativity and restore emotional equilibrium. Places dedicated to healing or therapy, such as yoga studios, massage parlors, or counseling offices, greatly benefit from sage burning. It assists in clearing residual energies from client sessions, maintaining a fresh and balanced atmosphere. Indigenous cultures consider sage a sacred herb, revered for its spiritual properties.

With more than 30 years of experience, Monique has been helping business owners achieve success in their ventures. In today’s dynamic economic landscape, wise business owners are leveraging every possible opportunity to gain a competitive advantage. Monique offers her expertise to help you enhance your business’s energetic imprint. Get in touch with her to learn more about how her services can benefit you. Numerous realtors and homeowners have reached out to me, a highly trusted assistant, seeking help in selling their properties. Even though their houses are well-presented and priced appropriately, they are struggling to find buyers.

Many different faiths, people, and cultures have maintained a close relationship with this honored herb. From Old World shaman healers to 21st century right-swiping shampoo users, you can count on it being a part of our story. Unlike lighting your best candle or burning incense, burning a bundle of herbs proves a more potent fire risk if done incorrectly.

One of the most common types of sage is white prairie sage, which beyond its holistic properties, also has antimicrobial properties. Sage release negative ions in the air which helps neutralize positive ions like pet dandruff, pollution, dust, and mold. It's packaged as a bundle of dried sage leaves has a stronger, more plant-like smell when burned. It's considered to completely remove any and all negative energies from space as well as induce a sense of calm, healing, and purification. If you’re wondering how to cleanse your home with sage, the method we use is super easy.

Interested in learning more about sacred plant medicines, and how to make them a part of your spiritual evolution? After Monique Chapman’s energy-clearing work was showcased on Good Morning America by The Corcoran Group, a prominent Real Estate Company in NYC, the house experienced a remarkable change. It looked renewed and rejuvenated as if it had just emerged from a refreshing shower and was now brimming with life.

In traditional Native American culture, burning sage is also thought to cleanse people of negativity and promote healing, wisdom, and longevity. Giselle Wasfie, L.Ac., a Chinese medicine expert and the founder of REMIX Acupuncture & Integrative Health, notes that the practice of burning sage is sacred in many communities and deserves our respect. To avoid cultural appropriation, it's something you should always be doing with intention, reverence, and deep gratitude to those who did it before you.

As a homeowner or realtor, it can be unsettling to encounter signs of the deceased previous owners still lingering on the property. It’s understandable that they may feel attached to their former home, but it’s important for the living to feel comfortable and secure in their new space. Clearing the energy of previous occupants or owners may help create a more peaceful and welcoming environment for all. Smudging helps maintain those homey vibes and positive energies you cultivate.

If your intention is set in a respective, mindful manner, then you are good to go. When we do meditative practices like this, it helps our minds free ourselves from past experiences and helps to instill new and more positive beliefs. Whatever your specific desires are for this sage cleanse, express those with a mantra.

Cool-toned sage, on the other hand, evokes images of soap suds, refreshing cucumbers, and tropical surf. Florida water contains water, alcohol and aromatic oils, which may be essential oils or perfume oils. Theirs is the most commonly commercially produced Agua de Florida brand, and while Peruvian shamans seem to swear by it, it does smell a lot like cheap cologne, due to its high alcohol content. Furthermore, its cloying fragrance may illicit vomiting due to your Pavlovian association with ayahuasca ceremony. You can find organic versions that might be handcrafted by a curandero or produced by smaller brands. When it comes to clearing negative energy and blessing a house, you can count on me to help.

A church invests in mental health in response to parishioners suffering

christ episcopal church charlotte nc

Perhaps the biggest step that Christ Church has taken is to create the new staff position of wellness director. The vestry, the lay leadership body, agreed to fund the full-time position in January 2019. Bill Blue praises his church’s commitment to shatter stereotypes around mental illness. Faced with a family mental health emergency and finding nowhere to turn, Bill Blue retired early from Wells Fargo.

“It was like a huge pressure valve was released and people could breathe when talking about mental illness,” she said. The experience emboldened Purdy to share her story at churches, mental health seminars — wherever she could. She launched her ministry as a speaker and advocate for mental health at Christ Church.

Lisa Saunders

Progress is underway as we build on our priorities to cultivate faith, foster connections, and promote the well-being of everyone in our parish and the city beyond.

Despite its growing support of mental health, the congregation was shocked by the rash of suicides. Among the dead was a 20-year-old college student, a 51-year-old businessman and father of two who was active in the church, and the Kocmonds’ son Nathan. As Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson teaches, preaches, and serves as a resource for the clergy and spiritual formation teams to foster deeper spiritual growth across the whole parish.

Edens said the ministry isn’t based on the belief that Jesus alone can heal what ails us. God, he notes, works through many means, including health care, exercise, meditation and more. The support group was formed after the congregation was rocked by a half-dozen suicides within five years — a series of traumas that affected nearly everyone at the church, the largest Episcopal congregation in North Carolina. In 2006, the church building was honored with placement on the National Register of Historic Places, thanks largely to the work of former parishioner Donia Norman.

A Spiritual Home for all people.

Coping with suicide hasn’t been the only struggle for parishioners. Personal experience with mental illness has prompted two church members to action. While the trend is too new to be reflected in hard numbers, mental health advocates and faith leaders say that a growing number of houses of worship across the nation are ministering to those with mental health challenges. Few have discerned the church’s call to nurture body, soul and mind as dramatically as Christ Church. After graduating from Yale and Furman Universities with degrees in organ performance and music theory, Ben came to North Carolina to serve as Organist and Choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church in Belmont. In 1992, he became Director of Music and Organist at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where he was the Founding Director of The Choir School at St. Peter’s.

The church building had been under construction for three years. It was undertaken and completed by several families in the area, including the Lash and Hairston families. Cora Futon received the first baptism in the church on June 20, 1886. Established in 1886, our mission is to serve God joyfully, faithfully and actively through family, congregational and community ministries. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.

A tenured music historian and writer, David’s love of music led him to develop a meaningful relationship with The Beach Boys, curating and reporting on their history for over 30 years. In 2021 he reunited The Beach Boys and their children when co-producing a re-recording of the group’s 1970 recording “Add Some Music to Your Day” with an accompanying music video that he directed to benefit Feeding America. David brings the same passion and commitment to his administrative role at Christ Church.

We worshiped on the lawn when weather and COVID-19 rates permitted. On Good Friday, families participated in Stations of the Cross outdoors, aided by audio recordings for each station available on our app. Christmas Eve and Easter pilgrimages provided opportunities to visit the sanctuary, beautifully decorated and filled with music. Some of these creative new events will surely become beloved traditions.

He has witnessed firsthand the healing power of music, and is a firm believer in daily meditation and prayer. A Charlottean since 1979, David is married to wife Gretchen, and has one son, Ethan. People longing to be back on our campus showed up for several drive-through events with great joy, including Parish Day, Trunk-or-Treat and a live nativity during Advent.

Parishioners rose to tell their stories, not just about financial woes, but about their spiritual and emotional well-being — or lack of it. “God cares about human suffering and calls us to attend to those who suffer,” he said. Rite II – Uses modern language but retains the beautiful imagery of Rite I with more prayer options. Rite I – Uses Elizabethan English (i.e. thee, thy, thou) and hearkens back to the rich language of Thomas Cranmer, the original prayer book creator. Follow this link for a full list of Christ Church’s service times.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God, he said; there is grace and hope for those who die from suicide. It has helped one member establish a nonprofit residential mental health center and another launch a one-woman crusade to educate people about bipolar disorder. It has hosted two appearances by bestselling author Brené Brown to share her message that asking for help is a sign of strength. In addition to the SOS group, the church has invested in mental health support and awareness in a number of ways.

The position calls for training and credentials in psychology, social work, counseling or psychiatric nursing, but rather than providing treatment, the director will triage parishioners to the right places for help. In addition to being on the church campus at least two Sundays a month, he or she will be available to respond to crises at any time. The roots of Christ Church’s mental health ministry trace back to the 2008 recession. Realizing that many in the congregation were having their lives turned upside down, the church organized a Sunday morning forum called “The Wisdom of Contentment” and invited members to come and share their struggles out loud. And most significantly, the church has begun a search for a wellness director, a new full-time position that will focus on mental health as part of a holistic understanding of what it means to be well. Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.

We seek to fulfill this vision by gathering to love God through our vibrant worship and by seeking to grow in our faith by engaging our hearts and mind in thoughtful, relevant education. We take seriously the call to create a safe community where all people are welcome, and where we can care for and support each other through all the passages of life. We are also deeply committed to serving and advocating for justice in our city, nation, and world. – Holy Eucharist Rite II (Church)This Rite II service, with contemporary language, has something for all ages including music, sermon and Holy Eucharist.

Delayed due to an ill passenger after loading. The seats are becoming worn and detaching from their velcro attachments.

Charlotte shooting: Community grapples with deaths of 4 officers

charlotte shooting news

"I am deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred," Vi Lyles, Charlotte's mayor, said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. "I ask that all Charlotteans keep them, and the other injured officers, and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time." Three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers who responded to the shooting were shot, Jennings said. They were identified as Christopher Tolley, Michael Giglio and Jack Blowers. Tolley underwent surgery and remains hospitalized in stable condition, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release. "These officers died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state," Ishee said.

Many roads in the area, including Interstate 77, were closed so ambulances could get to hospitals faster. TV footage showed ambulances speeding to hospitals with several law enforcement vehicles in front and behind them, sirens blaring. Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers who responded to the scene were also shot while trying to rescue the wounded officers.

The fund would also be used to support impact agencies and their employees. Assault weapons – what she calls "weapons of war" – like the high-powered rifle used by the suspect in the hourslong standoff Monday, "do not belong on our streets," the congresswoman said. "He fought for several hours and passed away from his injuries with his wife and family by his side tonight," Jennings wrote on X. "I am truly grateful for his bravery, service and ultimate sacrifice. He will never be forgotten, and we are forever indebted." "Our challenge to this community is take make sure that 3-year-old son grows up knowing his dad," Lyles said. "His dad was a law enforcement officer, he was a hero, he was someone that we should be proud to know and speak of."

A suspect is dead, and two persons of interest are in police custody for questioning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The neighborhood, of one- and two-story, brick homes and small trimmed lawns, is very safe, said Alex Rivera, who lives nearby. "Officers returned gunfire and struck the victim, who was later pronounced deceased in the front yard of the residence," Chief Jennings said. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper thanked the officers who responded for their "bravery and courage."

officers shot, 4 killed

Four other officers were wounded in the shootout, and Hughes was also killed. Parker said violence against law enforcement officers must not be tolerated. The CMPD initially reported that "numerous" officers were shot at the scene in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, which is in the Shannon Park neighborhood. At a press conference before the fourth death was announced, Jennings called the incident "the most tragic one that I've been involved in." Officer Poloche and three other members of the task force had been fatally shot while serving a warrant on a man who used a powerful AR-15-style rifle to fire waves of rounds at them from the second floor of a house.

Neighbors on Galway Drive said they did not know many details about the people who lived in the house where the shootout occurred, other than that a woman would often do yardwork out front. A 17-year-old girl and a woman were in the home on Monday during the shooting and have been cooperating with officials’ investigation, the police said. Eventually, Mr. Hughes left the house, armed with a firearm, and was fatally shot by officers near the front yard, the police said. In addition to the four officers who were killed, four others suffered injuries that were not life threatening. On Monday afternoon, a deputy greeted Ms. Poloche at her home, bearing the news that her husband, a slightly reserved man who loved his two sons, had been shot while serving a warrant in Charlotte.

Neighbors said gunfire continued for several minutes after the shooting erupted. A second person then fired on officers from inside the home, where a high-powered rifle was found, Jennings said. In addition to editing content, Alex also covers breaking news, writing about crime and severe weather as well as everything from multistate lottery jackpots to the July Fourth hot dog eating contest.

He was identified by police as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39. Two 14-year NC Department of Adult Correction veterans, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott were killed in the shooting. The last marshal killed in the line of duty was in November 2018. Chase White was shot in Tucson by a man wanted for stalking local law enforcement. Other state and local leaders chimed in as well with support for the officers and their families impacted by Monday's tragic events.

One other member of the task force, which is made up of federal agents and other officers from across the region, was injured. The Marshal’s Service confirmed that one of the agents had been killed but did not release a name. The names of the agencies where the two other officers worked were not released.

A knight of House Hightower and cousin of Lord Ormund Hightower. During the Dance of the Dragons, he joined the Caltrops, a conspiracy to kill the Two Betrayers, dragonseeds who had defected to the Greens but were plotting to take the Iron Throne themselves. One of the sons of Ser Otto Hightower, younger brother of Alicent Hightower and second in command of the City Watch of King's Landing during the Dance of the Dragons. Second son of King Uthor of the High Tower, Peremore was a sickly and crippled child, but had a great love of learning and hosted dozens of scholars, wizards, teachers, singers, etc. during his life. After his death, his brother King Urrigon granted land to "Peremore's pets", which may have been the founding of the Citadel.

Ser Hobert Hightower

In fact, with the release date announcement, HBO also released a master document of character descriptions that you can check out over here. This is a smart marketing ploy given that, like Game of Thrones before it, House of the Dragon will present viewers with many new faces to keep up with. It’s tempting to read the new characters in HBO’s “House of the Dragon” through a “Game of Thrones” lens, to see the dragon-riding princess Rhaenyra (played as a youth by Milly Alcock) as the new Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). Other parallels between the two shows exist as well, though they are perhaps less obvious.

Historical Hightowers - The Dance of the Dragons; 105 AC-131 AC

Plastic dragon eggs and dragons replace houses and hotels, and the board game comes with 102 themed cardboard coins. Once you accumulate enough strength--dragons certainly help--rival houses will hopefully bend the knee. Or perhaps Westeros will be invaded by the hungry beings (kids) from beyond the wall (their room) and no house will win (because you need to stop playing). We shall also meet an endless stream of new character including Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), a mysterious healer from Harrenhal, who plays a pivotal role in the book. Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) will step up as Castellan of Harrenhal, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) will surface as Otto Hightower’s son, and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) will follow up on his work in the Stepstones campaign. When Otto first became Hand of the King, Alicent accompanied her father to King’s Landing.

The Old Man of Oldtown

They were integral in the foundation of the Citadel and continue to be patrons of both the Order of Maesters and the Faith of the Seven. Before George R.R. Martin’s Westeros endured the Game of Thrones, Aegon the Conquerer set up his House of Targaryen to rule the Seven Kingdoms. Now, HBO is gearing up to show us the mayhem that happened when this house splintered into two sides that each claimed the Iron Throne. In one corner, Rhaenyra Targaryen had been named rightful heir by her father. On the other side, Aegon Targaryen II had been erroneously elevated to king after his wife, Alicent Hightower, mistakenly interpreted King Viserys’ deathbed ramblings.

The city is home to The Citadel, which is where the Order of the Maesters live and study. Any time a great lord seeks to add a Maester to their house, they must request one from The Citadel in Oldtown. Toward the end of his fifty-five-year reign, Jaehaerys appointed Otto Hightower his Hand. As no one was available to care for the king in his old age, Otto asked his daughter, Lady Alicent Hightower, to care for him. The lord remained through the rest of the King’s life and continued as Hand for his replacement, his grandson Viserys Targaryen. Despite this power, they have a reputation for staying out of conflicts unless absolutely necessary, having been devastated in previous wars like the Dance of the Dragons.

The series makes him part Dornish, which hasn’t been a detail previously. King Viserys’ first-born daughter, and the sole challenger to her unstable Uncle Daemon’s claim to the Iron Throne. She rides the dragon Syrax – the first flame-throated beast we see at the very start of the season. If it feels like this release date news has been a long time coming, that’s probably because it has. HBO has been hard at work franchising its Game of Thrones IP ever since the flagship series signed off with a controversial finale on May 19, 2019.

The family stuck by King Aerys during Robert’s rebellion and stayed aligned with the Tyrells as far as George R.R. Martin has written. During all of this, Lord Martyn Hightower became Lord Hightower. Martyn’s brother was the only knight sworn to the Faith of the Seven that Maegor pardoned after his war with the faithful and the suspicious death of High Septon. He yielded Oldtown to the Targaryens, and Ceryse was returned to King’s Landing, where she lived to old age. The family resided in a black stone fortress before building the High Tower that gives them their name. The Kings of the High Tower erected stone walls, towers, and fortifications to protect Oldtown from invaders.

A Brief History of Scent With Saskia Wilson-Brown

House Hightower is one of the oldest royal families in the region of Westeros known as the Reach, which is primarily ruled by House Tyrell. Unlike the Tyrells, who rule from a castle known as Highgarden, the Hightowers hail from Oldtown. The port city is well-known for its large, white castle, called the Hightower, which serves as the seat of House Hightower. Oldtown is also the home of the Citadel, where Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) briefly conducts some integral research in Seasons 6 and 7 of Game of Thrones. Member of a minor house, and the son of a steward at Blackhaven. No claims to any land or titles, but in the books he has a reputation as the greatest living warrior in Westeros, so that’s something.

According to ancestral records, the Hightowers are one of the oldest, if not the oldest noble house in Westeros, as there are records in Essos of trade with what would become the port of Oldtown before the arrival of the First Men. Archeological evidence suggest that the core of the Hightower, the Seastone Chair of the Iron Islands and the Mazes of Lorath had common builders, before the First Men. With his daughter, Alicent, firmly entrenched in King Viserys’s court, Otto soon might get a bit too involved in the politicking of the Seven Kingdoms. It's House Hightower's time to shine as HBO announces a release date for Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.

This was after the High Septon (who was a Hightower) put the kibosh on Meagor’s plan to marry his niece. Prince Maegor claims Ceryse is infertile after eight years of marriage and sends her back to Oldtown. The Hightowers and Gardeners allied with the Andals (one of the three major ethnic groups the Weterosi descended from) in the Andal invasion from North Essos (around 2,000 years before the conquest). Due to their defenses and allegiance with Highgarden, the lords of Oldtown became rich in trade and commerce over the centuries. During the centuries of the Kingdom of the Reach, other houses boasted of marrying into the Hightower family. Forbidden from calling himself Prince of Dragonstone, he later dubs himself King of the Narrow Sea, and his friends call him Prince of the City (the peasants also call him Lord Flea Bottom, though not to his face).

'House of the Dragon's House Hightower A Brief History of the Family That's Existed Since Dawn of Days

house hightower

The High Septon of the time had a vision from the Crone of Oldtown burning. Unlike King Mern IX, Lord Manfred Hightower heeded the High Septon and did not take arms against Aegon Conquerer. He was rewarded by having the city spared from the Targareyn’s Field of Fire. Lord Commander of Viserys’ Kingsguard, in which he’s one of the longest serving members. Assigned as Rhaenerys’ sworn shield (think what Ser Jorah Mormont was to Daenerys).

They Come from Oldtown

This led to the civil war that became known as the Dance of the Dragons. They control the large port city of Oldtown, and played a key role in the establishment of the Citadel, the headquarters of the Maesters, which they continue to support. Their keep is the Hightower, a massive castle and lighthouse said to be taller than the Wall, located in the middle of the city on Battle Isle.

House Of The Dragon Now Has Its Own Monopoly Board Game

The four-decked Honor of Oldtown is the flagship of the Hightower fleet. In the War of the Five Kings, so far the Hightowers have followed the Tyrell lead, declaring for Renly Baratheon on the outbreak of the conflict, and not changing to Stannis Baratheon's side after Renly's assassination.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock – younger / Emma D'Arcy – older)

Had previously been Jaehaerys Targaryen’s Master of Coin, but took up the role again for Viserys when Daemon dropped it. The Lannisters we met in Game Of Thrones (Tywin, Cersei, Jaime, etc) are Jason’s direct descendants. The wife of Lord Corlys, and cousin of Viserys and Daemon, known as The Queen Who Never Was after she was passed over for the Iron Throne in favour of Viserys – something she clearly still holds a grudge about. A Maester of the Citadel in service to House Stark at Winterfell before Robert's Rebellion. A bastard of House Hightower who instigated alliances between the North and the Riverlands, Stormlands and the Vale. Older brother of Ser Morgan Hightower of the Warrior's Sons and Queen Ceryse Hightower.

They likely founded the original Oldtown, one of Westeros’s largest and oldest cities. The last Hightower King, Lymond married his daughter to King Garland II Gardener and married Garland's daughter as well, making House Hightower the last of the Reach kings to swear loyalty to House Gardener. Interestingly, however, though House Hightower has always been immensely powerful and important they’ve never held full dominion over The Reach. House Gardener controlled the area through much of history from their seat in Highgarden before Aegon I arrived and installed House Tyrell as wardens. House Hightower is so-named because they live in a high tower…also called Hightower. Hightower (the structure, not the family) is a simple castle with an enormous lighthouse atop of it that sits on the outskirts of Oldtown right at the mouth of the Honeywine river.

Barely mentioned in the book (a single sentence), so for all intents and purposes, Ser Harrold is a series-original character. Like Horovitch, McTavish is total Game Of Thrones cast material – although he’s had Outlander, The Witcher and the Hobbit movies to make do with while he waited. This is an absolutely plum role for Ifans, and watching him skulk around Considine is, we’re confident, going to be one of the great joys of Season One. Lord Quenton Hightower was Lord of Hightower around eighty years before the series, and is remembered for his brutal actions when the grey plague hit the city.

Queen Alicent Targaryen (nee Hightower)

House Hightower is one of the most ancient, wealthy, and powerful houses in Westeros. The Hightowers have been at the front and center of politics in Westeros for centuries, owing to their rule of Oldtown, which was the biggest city in Westeros for thousands of years before the coming of the Targaryens. First, Daemon must zoom around Westeros to gather as many houses as possible for that fight. I suspect that the strategy set-up will take up much of this second season, but unlike with the book, Rhaenyra might even leave Dragonstone to participate. And we will literally see fire rain down from the sky when the two sides have to force allegiance from reluctant settlements. Additionally, despite what his title may suggest, Otto Hightower is not actually the Lord of his house in House of the Dragon.

Prince Peremore Hightower

There’s a lot we can glean already from the first episode of “Dragon,” from “Thrones” and from the books by George R.R. Martin without spoiling the new series. House Hightower[1] of Oldtown is a vassal house from the Reach that holds fealty to House Tyrell of Highgarden. Their seat is the Hightower located in the great city of Oldtown, the oldest, greatest, and second most populated city of Westeros. Oldtown lies southwest of Highgarden at the mouth of River Honeywine, and opens to the Sunset Sea. House Hightower[1] of Oldtown is a vassal house from the Reach that holds fealty to Lord Bronn of Highgarden. Their seat is the Hightower located in the great city of Oldtown, the oldest, greatest, and second most populated city of Westeros that lies southwest of Highgarden at the mouth of River Honeywine, and opens to the Sunset Sea.

Without getting into spoilers, the presence of Simon Strong and Alys Rivers, in particular, point to a sequence of events from the source material that unfolds at Harrenhal. There's a reason Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) made mention of Harrenhal when poring over the painted table at Queen Rhaenyra's (Emma D'Arcy) war council in the season 1 finale. The Hightowers made it to 297 AC when A Song of Ice and Fire takes place. While they still rule Oldtown, they have taken allegiance to Tyrells of Highgarden.

Main house (3 bed/2.5 bath) + lower level guest suite (permitted ADU), includes an open kitchen with vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors throughout, two fireplaces, new windows, zoned HVAC. Other features include a custom-built outdoor pizza oven, parking for 4-cars, tons of storage, loads of charm & character. Located in Hollywood Heights with a strong sense of community, centrally located, close to the studios, Hollywood Bowl, Metro Red Line, and the newest Hollywood restaurants. On the game board, you'll find key locations throughout your journey across Westeros and Essos. As usual, the main goal is taking control of as many strongholds as you can.

As Otto Hightower’s daughter, Alicent is extremely present in court and King’s Landing, and has an extremely close relationship with Princess Rhaenyra – though the pair often differ in their approach to matters regarding the Throne. Head of House Hightower, Voice of Oldtown, Lord of the Port, Lord of the Hightower, Defender of the Citadel, and Beacon of the South. In the spirit of continuing HBO’s educational mission with House of the Dragon‘s characters, here are some spoiler-free things you should know about the noble House Hightower. Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen. Ever since House of the Dragon entered production, HBO hasn’t been shy about revealing photos and descriptions of the characters involved in the story.

When House of the Dragon begins its tale, likely around the year 100 AC (After Aegon’s Conquest), Set Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) is one of the most influential men in the Seven Kingdoms. While his older brother serves as the Lord Hightower of Oldtown, Otto has an important job in King’s Landing as Hand of the King. A scholarly intelligent man, Otto essentially ran the kingdom for the last two year’s of the “Old King” Jaehaerys I’s reign, as the beloved monarch experienced ill health. Things generally don’t seem to go very well for the Hightowers when they leave the comforts of their Hightower. Though immensely rich and often very learned due to their relationship with the Citadel, they’re not particularly interested in participating the game of thrones.

Olivia Cooke will make her debut as the older version of Alicent Hightower in the back half of House of the Dragon Season 1. Here’s what you should know about House of the Dragon’s Alicent Hightower, and her powerful kin. Viserys’ Master of Ships, and a crafty and calculating politician. Known as ‘Breakbones’ because he’s reputedly the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms, although in the books he comes out of a tournament bout with Criston Cole rather badly (the jester and chronicler Mushroom dubs him ‘Brokenbones’).

He rides a dragon called Caraxes, wields a sword called Dark Sister, and sports a remarkably frizz-free blonde mop. The Hightowers were strong and loyal bannermen to House Gardener, and after House Gardener's destruction on the Field of Fire, they smoothly transferred their allegiance to House Tyrell. They were instrumental in the chaotic civil war that became known as the Dance of the Dragons, as it was Otto Hightower, Hand of the King, and his daughter Queen Alicent who were masterminds of the greens during the war. The Hightowers had been amassing their power in King's Landing long before the Dance, as Otto was Hand to King Jaehaerys and Viserys before he served King Aegon II Targaryen.

We are sailing out of that Port next week (Bliss) so I am hoping it will be better. Based upon the scheduled posted above, it appears that the Bliss is the only ship at Port that day so I would imagine no shuttle would be necessary (one would hope). There are several hotels or accommodations near the Long Beach Cruise Port. As mentioned earlier, I would recommend flying in the day before your cruise just to be safe. Converted to a hotel, accommodation, and tours were available until the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020.

Next, take the 710 Freeway to the end at the Long Beach Cruise Port. Uber prices can vary but expect to pay about USD 35+ if traveling from LAX to the Long Beach Cruise terminal. While you’ll need a hotel stay flying a day earlier, you won’t be at risk of missing your cruise. We have taken the short flight from Vancouver many times to Los Angeles to take a winter-break cruise. Our latest was a cruise on the Discovery Princess in January with Karen’s 81-year-old mum.

We spoke to the front desk there and alerted them that we would sail from Berth 46 and we were assured the were aware and would have a shuttle going there. I'm guessing the hotel will take an interest in where they should be sending their shuttle and be motivated to sort it out. I would be if I were them but, then again, I am an efficient type.

Affordable hotels and cheap motels can be found not far from the Port of LA in San Pedro. Alternative is a stay near LAX Airport with free airport shuttle, Hollywood, beachfront Santa Monica Beach,Redondo Beach or in a hotel near Disneyland California amusementpark in Anaheim. When sailing for the Port of Los Angeles, your options are somewhat limited for parking.
